Friendly, expert-led classes to make sense of pensions, retirement planning and the mid-life muddle.
No jargon, no judgement. Real help, real people, all in it together.

People learn better together, with real help from real people who’ve been there too.

About When I'm
Founded by Jude Gardner, who spent 25+ years in financial services research including as Head of Research & Insight at People's Pension, WhenI'm is built on a simple belief: people learn better together, with real help from real people who’ve been there too.

We offer in-person, 6-week courses for individuals and couples in their 40s, 50s and 60s to make time to get to grips with their pensions and retirement planning and build confidence in making important financial decisions. Based in Haywards Heath and Mid Sussex, we build networks in the local community for ongoing peer support.
We're not financial advisers and we won't sell you products. We help you take stock of your current situation, understand your options and make informed decisions. Our courses give you the time and headspace to get your financial planning properly organised. No jargon, no judgement – just real help from real people.
Just as NCT or antenatal classes bring together expectant parents at a major life transition, WhenI'm creates supportive communities for the transitions of midlife. Our classes are small (10 individuals or 7 couples), relaxed, and held in friendly local venues.
If you’re in the 'sandwich generation' – looking after children and/or elderly parents while struggling to find time for yourself, WhenI'm will help you dedicate time to get to grips with your pension and retirement planning with support from experts - alongside others in the same boat. We can't change the past, but we can improve our future.

Why This Matters to Me
I totally believe in living for today. In 2023, I turned 50 but hadn't been feeling myself for months. It turned out to be leukaemia.
A late diagnosis meant I was very poorly – four rounds of chemo, multiple infections, eight months in hospital, and a year of chemo tablets later...
I'm back and seizing the day.

Most of you know I spent those eight months in the haematology department at the Royal Sussex in Brighton. The team there saved my life and kept me sane, along with all my amazing family and friends.
I'm raising money as a heartfelt thank you to the incredible team that saved my life, took care of me and kept me sane (along with all my amazing family and friends). The donations will be shared between these charities that looked after me in body and spirit, so they can continue to support others going through similar journeys.
Donations will be shared between:
-
Haematology Oncology Ward,
Royal Sussex Brighton via Sussex Cancer Fund -
Macmillan
-
Leukaemia Care
